Underneath the ice caps of the arctic ocean near the North Pole is what many believe to be the largest oil reserve in the world. One day man will be able to access such oil and is already trying, but the question is "who?". Russia is damn sure trying and all of the other countries who border the Arctic Ocean(including the US) want to claim what may (or may not)end up being the last large supply of oil on Earth. The almost inevitable conclusion to these ongoing fights over these rights is they will be divided by the countries by percentage of land bordering the ocean. In essence it would be like Trump trading Peurto Rico for Alaska. It was a long shot. But it was worth a shot.

We wanted Cuba. Spain made us take PR and the Philippines with it. And the only one we couldn’t get ride KD was PR.

Problem being, China is making inroads in Greenland and would love to own Puerto Rico too. I will admit that with China in charge things would get straightened out in PR very promptly but we don't need the Chinese on our doorstep. We damned sure don't want them to com into control of Greenland either.

They don't want that, they want to be a State so they can get a bigger more bountiful government teet to suck on. I would bet anything that if Trump proposed tomorrow that he wanted to give them their total independence that they would scream bloody murder along with the demo-rats.
