The same reason singers look like they’re having labor pains when they try to hit that high note.
But the singer actually has to exert at a higher level to hit that high note. A guitar player is doing exactly what he does for every other note, except when they play a high note they do the face scrunch and shoulder shrug. What gives?
Marty McFly is a great example of this

My kids and I all experience music really vividly and emotionally. Whatever part of the brain fires-really fires in our heads. My son not only feels music, he sees music. Songs are colors to him. It used to freak me out when he was 10 and he'd tell me the color difference between Moby Dick and The Song remains the same.
I would isolate bass lines when I was five. I would isolate an oboe or some percussive element and almost only hear that when nobody else heard it. All my close friends were musicians or music -lovers. I feel night music and day music and I feel the "space" in music and gravitate to music that feels like wide open spaces. It's hard to describe but since we are a family of musicians and music-lovers- it makes sense to us.

It reads like someone with fibromyalgia and gluten sensitivity wrote that.

I get it . I’m a music geek. Beyond all hope. I talk about music like I’m having a spasm, lol.

I figure that if you can play the guitar this good, you can make whatever kind of faces you want to make.

I'm just messing with you. I like music, but am not a musician by any stretch.

I love steak, but if you had it shoved up your azz 3 times a night, 3 nights a week, it gets old.
Been many years since I had to live that Hell, but trust me, it's Hell....

I close my eyes when I'm really getting into playing my guitar.
jmho; I would think they don't care. They're making music.Their mind is in the Song.
I play bad acoustic. If I could make a Les Paul scream like they can,I'd make faces too.

John Mayer is a prime example of this, is he not?

Ray Charles/Stevie Wonder had a heightened sense and feel for the piano and their music. There's nothing wrong with that.

quote:Wrong. It's called "solo face."
It’s called guitar face. Joe Walsh is a master.
I follow these very underrated folks on Instagram (they have their stuff on their YouTube channel as well) named "Tiny Cinema" who would put out some of the craziest, most disturbingly funny shite that I've ever seen, but they would do it in 60 second or less.
Oftentimes the content was brilliantly done. Here's one of their 1st ones, and also one of my favorites called, "Solo Face."
When he tells the guy that it goes away after he dies...gets me every time, lulz. YouTube link: Tiny Cinema's "Solo Face"
