Putting up memorials for generals that lost the war long after their death is much closer to “re-writing history” than taking statues down right now .

General Lee was a great man who saved the lives of 100s of thousands during the peaceful transition of the Confederate States of America into the United States of America.

Are you asking how the Confederacy was different from Nazi Germany?

I said appeals to ridicule don't count. They basically signify that you don't have an argument.

Both regimes rebelled against the legitimate power structure of their country and enslaved and killed people based on race.

What are the significant differences that you perceive?

And it was fought over slavery. Don’t let anyone mislead you.
So why should I allow your ignorance to mislead me? The South did not want a war with the North because they knew they were at a huge disadvantage and would lose it. They had no designs on invading the North. The South was tired of being financially raped by the North to the extent that they, the South, were paying the vast majority of cost yet received by far the lesser amount of government spending. The North sought to increase their political advantage by making sure that no new slave states would be admitted meaning that the South would be even more at a disadvantage when it came to the balance of power.

The North even tried offering an Amendment to the US Constitution which would have enshrined slavery forever as legal everywhere it was in current practice. The South, if it was really fighting over "slavery" could have remained in the union and kept the institution of slavery. They didn't. It wasn't about slavery at all. Do your homework.

Definitely tearing down for me. If an appropriate governing body wants to change things out to reject changes in values then fine. Being ruled by a mob is an entirely different thing.

First, the problem is affirming the false premise that America was founded on racism.

There's no sense in pandering to an irrational, demonstrably false premise--muchless--trying to appease those espousing it.

Second, they're f)cking inanimate objects most people didn't even know about. They aren't effecting anyone. They aren't making anyone "unsafe". They aren't keeping people from succeeding in their daily lives. "There's a statue of Lincoln across town, so, I couldn't finish my homework" is the lamest excuse ever.

Finally, as I drive by an Audi VW dealership every day... I can't help but wonder if leftists really have a problem with racist symbols or not? Literally... Nazi-founded companies. Proudly displaying their logos for all to see.

Let's be honest... this more about trying to rub people's nose in it and white-shaming than anything else.

They are not asking my opinion, just tearing them down. That ain't right. I'm against it if they just think they can do it. It's too late to try to reason with me, they already ruined their chance of discussion through violence.

Mostly ripping them down that is against the law. If they want to put it to the vote and the people decide let’s take them down that is different. Mob rule will eventually result in a lot of bloodshed and the current mob will be fricked up with the quickness.

I’m MAGA as they come and have lived in SE LA my whole life but the statue issue is neither personal nor makes much sense to me.

To my knowledge, there are no confederate statues in Covington.

That being said, the only statue in New Orleans that I thought should have remained was PGT Beauregard. His desire for civil rights was impressive given his opposition in the New Orleans political arena in the post Civil War era.

From Nola.com

quote:

But after the war his reputation as a hero of the Confederacy was forever damaged by his outspoken work for human rights. As part of a coalition of prominent white and black New Orleanians, he not only argued to give black people voting rights but also pushed for integrated schools, public places and transportation. "I am persuaded that the natural relation between the white and colored people is that of friendship," Beauregard said in an address published in July 1873 in newspapers including The New Orleans Republican and The Daily Picayune. "I am persuaded that their interests are identical; that their destinies in this state, where the two races are equally divided, are linked together; and that there is no prosperity for Louisiana which must not be the result of their cooperation.

t has nothing to do with Confederate statues. They started there because it was easy to get small minds to agree with them that those should be taken down. Now they can do work to convince those small minds about other white people in statues.

THIS There were slave owners in the North also, as well as black slave owners, but you never hear anything about it. General Lee freed the slaves that he inherited and still gets no respect today for being the great general that he was who was actually offered to lead the North but turned it down. He was a God-fearing, decent man who is getting trashed today.....it's disgusting.
