BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - A bill signed into law by Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards says the state will adopt daylight saving time as the year-round standard time, pending changes in federal law.

“I had some seniors ask me just a couple of weeks ago when I was visiting a nursing home if we could keep the Daylight Saving Time all year because their loved ones come to visit and they want to get home before dark, and it really cuts it short, and I just think people are in a happier mood, maybe less crime, I’m not sure,” state representative Dodie Horton, the sponsor of the bill, told WAFB in March.

The law only goes into effect if the United States Congress amends current federal law to allow states to decide whether or not they adopt daylight saving time as their year-round standard time. If that should happen while the state is in daylight saving time, the state will not return to standard time.

The sun would rise at 8:00 am in Baton Rouge in December and January if we have daylight saving time year round. 8:15 am in north Louisiana.

Why should it need federal approval?

The Constitution doesn't give jurisdiction to time zones to Congress, therefore it belongs to each state.

I hope it doesn’t get approved by the feds. What are the chances they allow this?

So this means we’d be in the eastern time zone for half the year?

Assuming the fed ever allowed this

Except It’s been proven that fuel costs and energy consumption actually increases under DST.

The first attempt for nationwide permanent DST was actually pushed for by the coal industry for this reason. And the bill was repealed after they realized how shitty it makes winter mornings.

If you gonna go permanent of one of the two, go with standard.
