I looked into getting a raspberry pi to do that, but thinking about just getting the zwave USB stick and using my desktop pc. Doesn't seem like the open source software would eat up many resources.

It doesn't but if you want to run it on your PC you would need to run it in a virtual machine. I ended up buying a little mini pc on eBay for 120 bucks. Way more powerful than an rpi.
