This has to be a joke, right? They're claiming that since most bar exams for this summer are going to be delayed they should not only be allowed to practice law without taking the bar in their state, but they should also get diploma privilege for every other state.

Anyone actually agree with this?

It’s Reddit. All they ever do is overreact.

Not true. I’ve reached a few settlements despite court closures

Of course this is absurd and yet not surprising.

I don't think it ultimately really matters though as they're either working for a firm under licensed attorneys or else trying to scrap for work they'll likely never get unless it's a close friend or family member.

The multistate thing is totally absurd though. I have to pay thousands of dollars, wait many months and pass a fitness examination to be able to reciprocate. And in many states (SC, FL, CA, NY for e.g.), I'd have to sit for the bar.

Anyone who thinks that should automatically be flunked out of law school for being incompetent.

In Louisiana, I would be in favor of extending Rule 20 privileges under the circumstances and removing the course requirement. Let them do actual legal work under the direct supervision of a practicing attorney.

Not just reddit. There was a big article somewhere else that really pushed for it (can't remember where it was from). This will definitely pick up steam as law students are always very entitled.

Also, the NY bar just pushed back their bar exam to the fall. That is causing a lot of panic.

ABA just posted a similar article

Wisconsin is only state that currently practices diploma privilege if you go to a Wisconsin law school.

If the Bar is pushed back, I see more states enacting the Rule 20 to let unbarred graduates work under supervision.

I agree that they should be given a diploma but they shouldn’t be able to practice without taking the bar. That’s just dumb.

I can't stand lawyers or courts in general but the whole bar exam thing is beyond stupid. Surely anyone with half a brain knows the constitution is completely shite upon and laws in general are misused in extreme fashion. With that in mind, that makes the need to pass the bar exam impractical. Basically, the bar exam doesn't test much of what practicing law really is about.

Rule 20 would allow them to practice until they can sit for the bar, right?

The bar exam is just to keep some lawyers from never practicing. I think it does a pretty damn good job at that. If you can't pass on your 2nd or 3rd go, probably should fine another line of work.

Bunch of out of work lawyers will be suing the states to try to get this resolved. Let them all fight it out amongst themselves. Lawyers being lawyers.

Not as currently written. If you read the link I posted to it on SCoLA’s website, it currently requires the person to be enrolled in an law school’s clinic program. I think we should add a second track for students who have graduated but haven’t sat for the Bar yet.
