Foreign students have been a huge presence in the math and sciences schools at major universities for years. Almost every math and science class I took at Alabama in the early 90's had Asian TA's teaching the actual class.

I'd imagine it's gotten more prevalent but it's not a new thing. Most of them at Bama were Middle Eastern, but plenty of east Asians.

Decades. There's always been a high percentage of foreign-born students in American grad schools. Even if you are in favor of tighter immigration, this is one area where America profits greatly from immigration. One problem with the glut of Chinese copies of products, is all the fake reviews on Amazon. If you're interested in a product and relying on the Amazon reviews, run the page through this site, which analyzes the authenticity of the reviews:

https://www.fakespot.com/

With these companies you've never heard of, you're likely to be shocked or disappointed.

Reply All did a podcast episode on fake Amazon reviews. It was pretty interesting how companies figured out how to game the system. Supposedly Amazon cracked down on it, but I'm sure they've found other ways to game it.

That was gonna be my next response. But even fakespot sometimes can’t tell the difference between legit and not, but it’ll at least give you a good idea along with other clues form the product. But then again that leads one into having to cull through the damn things to figure it out.

As an example, I was going to buy my girlfriend some heated gloves to compliment her jacket. Apparently heated clothing is the new thing. If you search that on Amazon you get over 10,000 results and most have under 100 reviews. I know of two reputable brands for those products and neither show up.

I am convinced Amazon sells knockoff products that are in name brand packaging. This is something I mentioned on here a few times, but on two separate occasions I bought a pack of Old Spice deodorant. I used the gel. It was a pack of 6... The first time in each stick the gel was more water based. As if water was used to cut it.

I thought it was maybe a bad batch so I ordered another pack.. Same thing. Ever since I started using Amazon less and less.

Amazon did a great job of putting everyone out of business then getting shitty. They have people locked in. Many times i find prices better elsewhere but you have to look around. Also shipping dates are not as firm.

Yep. They need to be broken up.

We still use Amazon but honestly have been buying from several Chinese sites more and more. Very reliable, quicker in the last year than it was. Prices are so cheap and plenty of 1:1 products. Bunch of hidden links that we have purchased from as well. Can truly say I’ve only lost my money on one purchase but bank insured it in the end

This was a problem with memory cards a while back. I think it's more of an issue with 3rd party sellers, but I think even Amazon had to tighten up their supply chain.

A while back I was looking into a brand of razor blades, and people were saying you want the ones manufactured in certain countries. In other words, for common worldwide products, the branding is real but the quality/design/materials can vary by the factory. Products meant to be sold in a poor country at a low price end up being sold in the US via Amazon at a much higher profit.

Yep.

If you have a third party seller, you want to find them off of Amazon and see if they're an actual company. If you can verify that they have a physical location somewhere in the US it's safer to buy from them.

Even then I shop local unless I can't find the item without going online.
