I was 15 and had stayed home from school sick. My dad worked for a NASA contractor and we were driving to the drug store to get Theraflu or something when the news came on the radio. He got real pale and said, "I think I better get back to work".

Working in Clearview mall at a store. Went next door to bank to get change for the registers & everybody at the bank looked so sad & shocked I thought they'd been robbed. Then they told me the shuttle had blown up.
Glad I didn't see it live.
Watched rest of workday on a coworkers portable tv.
I have the nasa flight patch with their names on it.

My wife took her 2nd grade class on a field trip to the John Stennis Center that day. They were watching it in the tracking center when it happened. They were immediately escorted out without any explanation. Some of those kids probably needed counseling.

We were some morbid kids back then. It wasn’t 24 hours until the black humor started. I carry that sense of humor with me to this day. Pissed most of my family off with Kobe meme’s already.
People die.
People die.

yep, aviation community is notorious for black/gallows type humor and there is no such thing as "too soon"

I was home sick from school that day. Watched it on tv with my grandfather.

Yup, same here.. Kindergarten building at Denham Elementary. My mom(who was teaching there at the time) and another teacher kept the kids who wanted to watch it back from lunch a few minutes in order to see the launch. The horror on my mothers face was something I'll never forget.

Yes sir. Raised by a Korean War Naval Aviator who then went on to become the Fire Chief of a NAS. He dealt with death a lot. The 50-80’s were not a kind time to Naval Aviation or Aviation at large. He always carried that dark humor. I assume it is a coping mechanism.

To say Morton Thiokol and NASA management fricked up here would be the understatement of the century.
Everybody had gotten complacent. They were sending up teachers, Congressmen, Saudi princes. It was supposed to be a bus ride to orbit. This was a wakeup call that space travel is still a hazardous endeavor and you had better have your shite wired tight.

Right after Super Bowl. I was in New Orleans on an elevator when someone got in and said the Challenger had exploded. I remember more about the game. Sweetness didn’t score but the refrigerator did. Patriots got smashed.

A lesson that sadly had to be retaught in 2003
Their anniversary (Columbia) is coming soon as well (Feb 1, 2003)

4th grade, watched it live. After it happened, teacher basically said in not such terms that sometimes thing do go according to plan, and bad shite happens. We then went on about our day of learning.
Love my generations could give a frick attitude, and let's just get the shot done.

I remember watching GMA before getting on the bus for school that morning (4th grade), and the reporter said that morning that the launch pad was frozen. I've seen the pictures in the past few years, and there were indeed fairly large icicles around and under the pad.

You are correct. A few astronauts were alive until ocean impact. No one in the media mentioned that for a couple of years.

Central Europe knows who delivered them from the boot of the USSR.
They also hate Obama because he sold them out to Russia.
