Always defer.
why? It all equals out, so you should put your best unit on the field first, to take control of the game as early as possible.

Always defer? What if our defense was horrific - do you still want to give Clemson the ball first?

Put your best unit on the field as early as possible. Take the ball.

For home and away games it makes the most sense to defer. Before a game, the home crowd is usually amped up so you typically want to feed off of that energy (if you're the home team) and start out on defense. If you're away, you also want to start out on defense so the amped up crowd is somewhat subdued by starting on offense.

For neutral games it doesn't matter; but, this is not a neutral game. If we win the toss, we should defer possession to the second half.

For the bajillionth time, please give me a link to anytime in the history of football, a coach has turned to an assistant late in the first half, and said "hot damn!!!!!!!!!!!!, we are kicking off to start the second half, gimme 5, you sexy mf."
You won't be able to provide the link, because it's never happened. And yet we have this same stupid rhymes with trucking question every.fLucking.game.

You always defer because you have more information in the 3rd quarter than the 1st quarter. Not just information on how the opponent is defending you, but also more information on how the game is going, how desperate or not are you for points, do you need to be going for it on 4th down or kicking FG, going fast-paced or slow it down, etc etc etc.

Not to mention the 1st quarter is the least important quarter of a football game.

And the fact that it’s very typical for teams to start slow, especially in big games after an extended layoff as they “feel out” their opponent during the scripted portion of the game and settle in and move past the “nerves” portion of the early game.

You always defer if you win the toss.

That said, it’s a coin toss...it is what it is. The coin toss and whatever team’s decision to defer or take ball will not decide the winner of the game. But the correct football move is to defer if you win the toss and have the choice.
