We destroyed A&M 50-7. You squeaked out a 24-10 win.

The ACC is a dumpster fire. Holding Wake, NCState, and Boston College to single digits is no big deal.

Players back from injury/suspensions.
They have come together as one solid unit.
Most of the “LSU’s defense sucks” rankings was overblown out of proportion by people who just looked at the final score and stats and didn’t actually watch the game. We shut almost every team we played down in the first half all year. We had a huge lead by halftime on just about every team we played this year. The defense got lazy in the 2nd half of those games and lost focus.

Go back and watch the games. Only one team scored more than 14 points against the LSU defense in the first half and that was Florida (technically Vandy scored 17 in the first half but 7 points was against the offense due to a fumble into the end zone recovered by Vandy so really they only scored 10 against the defense).

In every one of those games we were up pretty big by half with the exception of Florida and Auburn. The defense actually played a much better second half against Florida and held them to just 7 points.

We ain’t telling you crap

Ask Kellen Mond ... Texas A&M
12 carries -8 yards

Member Texas A&M vs Clemson ... 24-10 score

Ask Jake Fromm ... Georgia
5 carries 4 yards

Ask Jalen Hurts ... OK ... Heisman runner up
14 carries 43 lousy yards

Think that Clemson Tranny Frankenstein does better than Jalen Hurts

Where was he when the Heisman award was being given out?

Getting Estrogen shots for his sex change?

What are the strengths of the LSU defense?

The coordinator is probably the best in the business right now (certainly I like your man, Venables) with fast, athletic players at every position, most of whom will play in the NFL.

couple of fantastic DBs

2 will be drafted in the first round next year and a third would be if he wasn't 18 years old. Every defensive back on the 2-deep chart will play in the NFL, most in 2020 or 2021.

Teams ran "pretty effectively" when we had 3 and 4 touchdown leads. They haven't since folks started badmouthing the defense.

But, be my guest, badmouth this defense. They feed off that.

CU fan here. There are a lot of threads on the board about the LSU offense. What are the strengths of the LSU defense? I know you have a couple of fantastic DBs, and that edge rusher was reeking havoc on OU Saturday. But what is the overall feel from the board? What changed from earlier in the season when teams ran pretty effectively on your team?

I posted this in an OU forum - it’s long but applies here:

While LSU has given up 303 points this year 215 (71%) have come when the team is up by two possessions or more (133 with a 3+ score lead). It is understandable and smart this would be the case. With a 3+ score lead LSU has often shifted away from first / second team defense.

Also this defense has not allowed a point when trailing. I believe only LSU and Clemson hold this distinction in 2019. (No longer the case - Clemson gave up multiple scores while behind on Saturday.) LSU has been behind for a total of 31 minutes this year. (Northwestern State, Vanderbilt, Florida, Auburn twice). In total there were five times a team took a lead against LSU, three of those times LSU scored on the following drive to re-take the lead or tie the game. The other two times (both against Auburn) LSU defense held the opposition scoreless until they tied or retook the lead. It is clear this defense plays best in tight situations - when behind or tied the defense has only given up 34 points.

Finally and I think this can't be overstated LSU, especially on defense is finally healthy. There are three main games that are used to point out LSU's defensive weaknesses. Texas, Alabama and Ole Miss.

Heading into the Texas game LSU lost Todd Harris for the season, during the game there were injuries to Glen Logan, Rashard Lawrence and K'Lavon Chaisson. The game was played during an extreme heat event and there were a number of players who missed plays for cramps and dehydration. So in the second half especially you had a banged up defense playing skilled but inexperienced true freshman in a hostile road environment. Those aren't excuses but they are facts and are part of the reason Texas put up the offensive numbers they did.

LSU also had key injuries / suspensions in the week heading into the Alabama game. Grant Delpit had a severe high-ankle strain in the 4th quarter against Auburn and was no where near 100%. Michael Divinity one of the teams best LB's was also suspended from the team four days prior to the game. Alabama also had a punt return, a trick play, and a long pass against a bad defensive scheme to account for 21 points and nearly 200 receiving yards.

The Ole Miss game is most often used as the evidence for why the defense is bad, especially against a running QB. This was a game where LSU was up 31-7 at halftime, on the road, the week after beating Bama. There was a pretty clear letdown in the second half. There were bad gap assignments, and Delpit who was playing but hobbled lost contain and took bad angles on long QB draws. That said the game was never in doubt, the lead was always at least two possessions. In retrospect the second half of the Ole Miss game may have been the best thing to happen to LSU. The national media overreacted, the CFB pushed LSU to #2 on the performance of the defense and lit a fire under their butt.

good questions

The LSU defense was a sour spot to LSu fans because it wasn't performing to LSU standards. We gave up late scores to UF, AU, Vandy, Texas, Alabama, Ole Miss...each of these games were not as close as the final score appeared...

part of the defense not being great was
1. our offense scoring fast and often
2. Some young guys on D learning to play at this level (Stingley and others)
3. Early injuries to defensive line, lost Starting CB for the season
4. Lost senior LB for 6 games, back for this game
5. Delpit injured all year long but healthy now

Week 11, the defense got tired of being called the weak link, dropping to #2 after beating 5 top 10 teams. Rumblings of "fire Aranda" were actually typed on this board....LOL

Aranda is now dialing up more pressure on QBs, our Edge Rusher Chassion is playing like a first rounder we knew he was before his knee injury last year. Laurence will not outrun this cat.

... I look for LSU to clamp down on Clemson's running game...we understand you are pretty balanced but LSU will work to take one part away...our DB's are good enough to be on a island, Aranda will likely play a lot of man to stop the run (if necessary) ...forcing Laurence to be on his game in 3rd and longs

Clemson punted 7 times against OSU...if that happens in the title game, well, let's just say you can't give LSU the ball that many times...mathematically this is a disaster for Clemson if they punt almost 2 times a quarter.

LSU is a fast defense, it's very capable of playing at a high level, they are in fact peaking right now....

the last 5 games have been solid, they just held OU to 220 yards under their normal average, this is with a huge lead in the game where big chuck plays are usually allowed.

I agree with all of this. I also think the emergence of Maurice Hampton and the the development of Kerry Vincent as reliable coverage players has helped the defense improve. Delpit and Stevens are allowed to play closer to the line where they are more effective.

OK, you gave up an average of 35 pts to Tex, Vandy, Flo, and Ol Miss, none of whom strike fear into people when you are talking tough teams this year on offense.

Heck you gave up 20 to Arky which is 110th in scoring offense.

So, now go read my original post and reply

Gonna be tough to have an honest convo is this is what you bring...

The only game listed that was even a game was UT and maybe UF. We beat UF by two TDs.

Now keep in mind that every game in the few weeks after UT was a game with nearly the entire starting DL out with injuries.

So Vandy...defense gave up 24 (watch the game) in a game where we scored in the 60s.

Ole Miss...a game we were up by 35 pts...playing an injured safety...Yup gave up some yards...game never in doubt.

Arky....did you watch the Arkansas game? Did you do anything other than look at the score? Be honest.

It was 49-6 going into the fourth quarter. They scored against the backups and kicked an onside kick and scored again.

You were a bad 2-pt conversion play from losing to UNC...so what's your point?

This is debatable but the fact that this statement can be discussed tells everyone they're very good. FTR, this would mean they're better than:

Tre White
PP7
Mo
Greedy
HB (he did play CB in '11)
Corey Webster

And that's just post-2000.

Stingley is on course to be the best ever.

4 first rounders who finally have all been 100% healthy since the Arkansas game for the first time all year.
Since then:

LSU 56
Ark 20

LSU 50
Texas A&M 7

LSU 37
Ga. 10

LSU 63
OK- 28

Ark. and OK points were garbage scores in the 4th quarter.

Here is the deal, in the final three games of the season, Clemson's defense allowed an average of 359 yards of total offense. While LSU's defense, on the other hand, allowed an average of only 259 yards of total offense.

Meanwhile, in the final three games of the season, LSU's final three games were against better teams than the final three teams Clemson played against.

Furthermore, when you compare our two games to our only common opponent, which is Texas A&M, Clemson beat A&M 24 to 10 and held them to 289 yards of total offense while gaining 389 yards of total offense on A&M.

While, LSU, on the other hand, beat A&M 50 to 7 and held them to just 169 yards of total offense while gaining 553 yards of total offense on A&M.

Finally, it's very obvious who has the better offense out of the two teams. Indeed, LSU is easily the top offense in the land and even though they played and beat six teams ranked in the AP Top Ten. While Clemson's offensive numbers, on the other hand, are obviously inflated cause Clemson played primarily weak and mediocre ACC teams.

LSU is in the national spotlight all the time. Dude do some fricking research, most people here could probably give an accurate synopsis of Clemson
