ESPN app will not allow that, it blocks it

Sling or Hulu will let you if you have those, or just stream off Reddit for games that’s what I do if needed

I wonder if this is recent? Last time I used my lightning to HDMI was to streamed LSU/MSST SEC Championship game? I might have used it more recently but I can't remember. But I know for a fact, if you don't have an Apple lightning/hdmi adapter you can't stream certain things. I purchased from an authorized apple seller on amazon...those knock offs on amazon usually has a disclaimer..."NOTE: Not Compatible with paid videos in the app, such as Netflix,Amazon Prime videos,Hulu,Comcast tv,HBO go,Honda motor,Xfinity,Vudu,DIRECTV etc.Because these App are encrypted and are not authorized for third-party software sharing."

ETA: ESPN does not work anymore on my hdmi/lightning adapter.
