The timing of this maneuver is strictly coincidental. LINK

"In a report issued in January, the task force said the only way to replace the bridge “in a reasonable period of time” was through a public-private partnership funded with tolls. However, the report’s authors based their conclusion in part on the premise that the state’s federal matching dollars were pledged elsewhere."

Now that the formerly M.I.A. state dollars are back in play, will this still be a toll-based project?

Tolls make lots of sense - especially when we're broke, but they're a hard sell to the general public - especially in the immediate vicinity of the new project... in this case, LC. Huge blow-back expected if tolls are involved (see proposed Belle Chase Bridge project). Prevailing culture wants everything for free. That $300 million surplus is a drop in the bucket compared to what the state needs in the way on infrastructure improvements. And the $300MM has to spread around - not just roads.

Not going to happen. FHWA won't allow a toll bridge on an interstate hwy.

That's a bypass. That's okay it can have a toll. My point is the interstate bridge needs to be replaced and it cannot be a toll bridge.

There's plenty of tolls on interstates. Tons in the northeast. A couple in Florida.

It's a new bridge replacing the old route through the tunnel and across Mobile Bay. Might want to contact the folks in Alabama and tell them to scrub the project...

"In an expected move, the Federal Highway Administration gave the environmental clearance Friday on the $2.1 billion Interstate 10 Mobile River Bridge and Bayway project." LINK

Those roads predate the interstate system. Another example is the Kansas Turnpike, which carries Interstate 35.

I-75 Alligator Alley through the Everglades is tolled and does not predate the interstate system.

I should have been clearer. That road was first constructed as a state toll road before being adopted into the interstate system.

However, the original prohibition on tolling new interstate construction has been twisted beyond recognition today. It appears that can be bypassed (no pun intended) by not using any federal funding.
