Coast Guard now reporting that the raft was a false alarm

If the are floating in their boat I don’t see why they can last a very long time.

Now the USCG is saying the life raft search is back on.

I've been trying to figure out what could cause this situation. Obviously it could have been motor problems, weather, or a boat malfunction.
If they were running what could they have hit? I've heard stories of shipping containers falling off of ships, maybe a tree, but what other debris has anyone run across that could cause a catastrophic failure?

a great number of hull failures are caused by the simplest of things...like a 2 dollar plastic thru hull fitting.

Buddy borrowed a bay boat, called me saying he was taking on water and headed north. Plastic fitting was broken on thru hull, try that 50 miles out in a storm. If the boat was still floating the coasties would’ve found them by now. Similar to the kids that were never found two summers ago. Bad deal all the way around.

Took my new boat out a while back. Flipped bilge switch before going to make sure it worked, and all was good.
Unbeknownst to me, the aerator pump had a big crack under it, and water was steady coming in the hull. Auto bilge never turned on, because a hose moved, and was sitting on the float. I only noticed it when I looked back at the transom, and water was maybe 1" from coming in. Maybe another 5 minutes of idling, and we would've been swimming

Like I said I understand a boat malfunction and it being a 2002 model that is a high possibility.

Are you talking about those two young kids?
Posted on 8/21/19 at 5:51 pm to Janky
Yes, think they were 12-13 yo. Any body of water can be a cold hard beotch if you don’t respect it.

I remember that. They found the boat floated up in Bermuda with life jacket inside but no kids. That gives a little hope that they maybe just haven’t found it yet. You are probably right, but I hope not.

Blows my mind that all boats dont come with brass seacocks and bilge access

No matter your experience, never ever assume that you can beat Mother Nature

And you’re talking:) Our boats were wired by drunk monkeys and that can go south quick, fast & in a hurry.
The boats that sank a couple Saturdays ago 52 miles out were lucky there were many recs to save them or they would’ve been in the same situation. Redundancy is key after the bank isn’t in site.

looks like they found a confirmed fishing bag from one of the anglers in the water.... nothing else that is confirmed from the boat i don't think.

They found that a couple of days ago. The USCG search will be called off at sunset today.

it's really stupid there's not more regulations to offshore fishing boats.
If you go X miles offshore, your boat must properly be equipped with X devices these days or you're going to get hit with a ridiculous fine.

Damn.
For all of history men have gone to sea and for all of history men have been lost to the sea. Hopefully the family can find some peace in that they were lost doing what they loved.
