Time to pump the breaks. The defense finished 5th in the SEC last year.

Sure -- getting Chaisson back helps. Yes, having a true NT helps. But the defense was actually quite bad against the run last year (7th in the SEC, 9th in the SEC against ranked opponents).

I expect this defense to be solid, but not one of the all-time greats.

It could possibly be a great defense, but it won't be more than a middle of the pack defense unless the defensive line is better.

We haven't seen a Glenn Dorsey, Michael Brockers, Benny Logan, Chad Lavalais, Tyson Jackson, Drake Nevis, Marcus Spears, Booger McFarland or Kyle Williams on this line yet.

Last year's unit couldn't stop the run or push the pocket. If that group isn't better, the defense won't be much better than last year's pretty average defense.

Was coming to remind folks of this.

2011 is the best ever at LSU. Arguably CFB.

I don't think LSU has ever had more talent on the defensive side of the ball, first string, 2nd and so on, than they had in 2011. I was just using '82 as an example that the 2019 defense has a lot of competition to be called the best in LSU history. 2003 had a great defense as well, and probably the best coaches of any other LSU defense. Not as much talent overall, but very smart, big and athletic players. If we go by talent alone, I'd say 2011, if we go with talent plus coaching it'd be 2003. Who knows though, this 2019 defense may end up being mentioned with those as well.

Can we play at least one game before we declare this team the beat ever.

03,06 and 11 were all time great defenses. This one has a long way to go to reach that level.

Not even close, we still don't have the dline we are used to, we have to replace a huge hole at MLB and losing one of our top db. Let's see how the younger guys do first

Ever? No probably not, One of the better teams weve returned in a while though.

A lot of how "elite" we end up being rides on Chaisson. If he picks up where he lefts off, watch out. With these DBs we have he is going to have a really fun time getting after QBs as they struggle to find people open downfield.

That is a bold statement. Who would be considered in contention with that unit?

Im prepared for the downvotes. But on paper i believe this team will be 2nd only to 2011 in talent.
The defense is foolish and we have a deep WR and RB core with experience on the OL
And Burrow will be better than last year in a better scheme.
It all depends on the OTs ability to improve on last year.

In all of CFB? Really? Come on bruh. Had 21 hung on them when it mattered the most. Kills your all of CFB argument.

Actually the defense played pretty well in that game. The offense did them no favors.....

it took Bama until the 4th qtr of the BCS Championship game to actually score a TD. with like 5 minutes left. the first 15 pts were all from FGs. in almost 2 full games and an OT, our defense held a pretty good offense with a Heisman finalist RB out of the end zone.

meanwhile our offense racked up 90 yards total for the game, and fumbled at the 50 to set up Bama's TD.

PS

if we're talking "on roster" talent, the 2010 defense actually had all of the 2011 drafted guys you listed PLUS Pat Pete (1st round), Nevis (3rd), K Shepp (3rd), and Pep (7th).

of course a lot of the 2011 and later standouts were still young and finding their way in 2010 (and Ego was redshirting), but man that was a ton of talent.

THIS

The play making, game changing ability ALONE of that 2011 defense was unmatched.
