That was truly a horrible day and I have never forgiven Bum Phillips for trading Archie Manning. Archie Manning was nothing but pure class and a tremendous role model. He more than earned the love and admiration of the City of New Orleans and Saints fans. I think the answer to the OP is as simple as before Drew Brees came along there was no other QB in such regard as Archie Manning. Archie Manning was Mr. Saint. What's more telling is that about 99% of the bad things said about him here come from a bunch of pissed off LSU fans. Yeah, Archie Manning was my all time favorite Saint, probably still is if I give it some thought, though Drew and Deuce McCallister are right up there.

Manning was traded for Leon Gray.
The saints traded a first round pick for Earl over two years later, when he was completely washed up.
