Morality (noun) - principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior.

You do not have to have religion (promise of divinity) to know what is right or wrong here on earth. Empathy is not a religious trait, but rather observing from experience how you wish to be treated and treating everyone else accordingly.

The premise that empathy would not exist without religion is kind of silly. I think the main mechanism of morality is the developed human brain, capable of understanding complex thought and, in fact, empathizing with others. This complex thought would not exist had people not evolved thumbs and invented fire to cook their food, so more energy can be used to fuel other parts of the body (brain) rather than fight off bacteria and disease. If you want to argue that God created consciousness, then thats fine, I cannot argue with that.
