An extra 4-6 pounds for 15-25 miles a day would suck. I already do what I can to save ounces here and there.

I’m out on the trail in the Georgia/NC section at least once a month. In the bubble and when I haven’t seen anyone in 30 miles, never felt unsafe. This issue has been on white blaze since the first one. Guy with mental issues and on lots of drugs. I think he was selling some sort of dope as well to bubble hikers.

Disclaimer: I don't hike, but I spend a lot of time outdoors hunting, fishing and working. W/ the right equipment, a hiker should be able to carry concealed a handgun for self defense w/o the aforementioned concerns. A 380 like my Kahr CW380 that's small enough to fit in nearly all pockets weighs only 10.2 oz, unloaded. Even a 9mm like my Kahr CM9 or Kimber Micro 9 doesn't weigh much more at approx 16 oz, unloaded. While wearing my CM9 in a TT Gunleather outside the waistband holster, I've driven >12 hours and hunted all day w/o noticing the gun. A hiker can carry a nice handgun for selfdefense w/o discomfort if the equipment is chosen properly.

For hiking, what do you carry and where do you carry it?

Compact frame?
Hip holster?

Get a nice holster (I'd go w/ an OWB holster w/ the gun at the 4 o'clock position), a light gun, an extra mag and a belt designed to carry a holster and you'll be good to go. I'd prob go w/ a single stack 9mm like my Kahr CM9. CW9, Springfield XDs, S&W Shield, Ruger LC9 series, Beretta Nano, various Sigs and many others. Re: "compact" frame, that usually just means the barrel or grip is a little shorter than usual. One can get a compact gun for cc that doesn't have "compact" in its name. If you don't mind a little extra weight, one could get gun w/ a much bigger mag, such as the Glock M19, Springfield XD, S&W M&P and numerous others.
