need to re sod a backyard that has a few big canopy trees. Probably only gets a couple hours of direct sun a day. Any advice on best type of grass if I were to resod?

You are going to have a hard time with any grass if it is too shady. Your best bet will be a tall fescue though.

In the heat of the summer, it is going to brown, right?

And don't you have to aerate and overseed every year?

No, it should be fine given the amount of shade cooling things off. It will stay green through the winter as well when others are dormant.

Aeration is good for any lawn type. Fescue doesn't spread like Bermuda, Zoysia, or St Aug so you will have to seed if you have bare spots or if it thins out.

So in a shady environment, it's basically a guarantee it will need to be overseeded annually?

St Aug is probably the most shade tolerant grass that grows well here. If that doesn't do well, it's too shady for turfgrass and you may need a ground cover or mulch it.

I’ll recommend a not widely accepted idea - Just plant monkey grass and mow it. Monkey grass has spread underneath my oak trees and I just mow it. It is doing the best in highly shaded areas. Better than the St Augustine. Wish it would spread faster.

What region of the USa are you in?

carpet grass, it looks like centipede. Don't know if you will be able to find sod though. You can spread seed it and grow if fairly easy.

I planted y’all fescue in my backyard because it doesn’t get a lot of sun. Just oversees it in the fall every year. The seed itself is dirt cheap compared to others. In the summer if it starts turning brown just give it a little water.
