Flowerbed is close to front porch so I don’t want something that will mature to a large size. Something easy to grow that I can build a small flowerbed around.

Japanese red maple. Gorgeous tree, slow growing. Spring and fall red color.

Ive got the Japanese lace maple. 20 years old, about 4 1/2 feet tall, maybe 7’ across. It’s got beautiful maroon leaves. Umbrella form. Deciduous. Good plant.

I like this suggestion. Little maintenance which is usually end goal. Great smell when blooming.

Sweet olive is a good choice.

Come holly. Shaped, manicured, good looking, and easy to maintain

We love Lantanas they grow flower long and humming birds butterflies and bees love them in the winter they die back so ya trim them back to small next year they come roaring back.

Definitely sweet olive. My favorite smell in the world. Reminds me of walking through the Quad in the spring.

Just an important PSA about lantana: they are highly toxic to dogs.
Do not have lantana, sago palms, and oleander around dogs. Yes, there are people that have these plants and dogs, but their dogs must not care for them.

What is your max height you want?
I’m a big believer in edible landscaping so I would recommend a dwarf fruit tree or bush, especially blueberry. I know it isn’t for everyone though.

Definitely sweet olive. I have 8 of them for about 6yrs and love their sweet, scented, small white flowers. Never a problem with bugs or fungus.

I planted a young Japanese maple in the fall. When should I expect it to start blooming.

I've got a sweet olive, prolly 2 years old now, that is growing/leaning due to it chasing the sun. Going to have to figure out how to straighten her up.

Japanese Magnolia
We have one in the front yard. Love it except when it drops all of it's flower petals. They literally cover the entire area with it. Still a nice flowerbed tree nonetheless.

Pineapple Guava Tree. It is low maintenance, grows in just about any soil and produces tasty flowers/fruit. Also Self pollinator.
Sweet olive or Japanese magnolia are good choices like said above too.
