Apparently, even after Singletary. Or maybe LSU just sucked in bowl games in the 80's.

Doc I will try to get the 1908 book on LSU football reprinted, right now I'm very busy with the Vanderbilt Library. Bud Johnson and I are going to get it copied in some way.
The book has the team photo which everyone has seen, and photos 15 of the players, Coach Wingard, Manager Himes and Colonel Boyd.
As I also posted before there are some game action photo's form 1908 out there, for they were going to include them in the book (but didn't have the money to it appears.)
I think the Seip family may have the game action photos.

Doc Fenton, since you were quarterback during the 1908 season, maybe you could tell us how good you guys were.

LSU should recognize this. Not many teams outscore their opposition 442-11.

Things you need to know about football in 1908;
1st the football field is 110 yards, center field is the 55 yard line.
2nd If you score the other team has to kick off to you.
3rd Passing is by the box, from one box you can only pass ahead in a streight line and to both sides of the field in a streight line.
The football fields at the time are checker boards, so one can see the boxes to pass too.
Another thing games are not 60 minutes, most on avg are 40 minutes, with 2 20 minute halfs.
So that 441 points isn't in 600 minutes, it is closer to 340 minutes.

I bought a calendar that has 11x14 prints for each month. I framed them and hung them in my office. One of the prints says "LSU, Champions of the South '08".

BTW, for those ripping Bama's "false claims" to MNCs, checkout what happened to them in 1966 and 1977. After those BS years I'm willing to give Bama the benefit of doubt for a couple of their lesser claims.

Even though it was long ago, I thought it was awesome how LSU beat Baylor 89-0. Those are playstation numbers.

Tigerdroppings has a history page. They should add a national championship section and do a poll asking the readers if we should recognize it.

Really no reason not to claim the 1908 title. Pennsylvania and Harvard are listed as 'recognized co-champs'. No team south of the Mason-Dixon line was 'recognized' as a National Champion until Georgia Tech's 1917 team.
Other SEC teams such as Vanderbilt's 1906 and 1911 teams, Auburn's 1913 team and Tennessee's 1914 have laid claim to 'retroactive' NC such as our 1908 one.
Whereas it can be difficult to compare scores right now such as 2003 LSU vs 2003 Southern Cal or 1997 Michigan vs 1997 Nebraska, it certainly is more difficult doing so with games played 100 years ago considering some teams back them were very good and may only play club football today or vice-versa,were woeful then and now play strong football.
Still, Harvard's 1908 'co-title' consisted of
Bowdoin 5-0
Bates 18-0
Maine 16-0
Williams 10-0
Springfield 44-0
Navy 6-6
Brown 6-2
Carlisle Indian School 17-0
Dartmouth 6-0
Yale 4-0
Scoring : 132-8
Ivy League schools were strong then as was Navy and Carlisle Indian School. However,its hard to imagine there was ever an era where Bowdoin, Bates, Williams and Springfield were solid programs. These schools simply were close by and made for an easy game.

That's gold, Doc. You need to pitch that to the athletic office. They could have at least one game next year recognize one of the past champions. Hell, they could even do a throw back game, wearing the numbers on the helmet (1958) & such.

i know some people that still talk about 1908. I think we should recognize it but its not like we're that desparate for a national championship
