I don't disagree with this. I still don't agree, for example, that being of a particular rank at Alabama is close to or better than being a particular rank at Emory, but there is no doubt Alabama is a success story here.

My law school alma mater has dropped 3 spots since I was there and hanging onto the T-10 by the skin of its teeth. That said I am 100% sure I couldn't get in today, the landscape has changed a lot in the last 30 years.

I always saw LSU as being in an unusual predicament brought on by Napoleonic Code. How do you attract top students from out of state if Common Law is going to be overshadowed? I think LSU has to focus on being the best school for future Louisiana attorneys and let the chips fall where they may. Being a public institution it has that obligation.

In the end, people get too wrapped up in the ratings, just like every level of education you get out what you put in. Outside of the most nepotistic Biglaw firms where you went means nothing compared to what you can do after the first 5 years. Plus, a lot of the lower and mid-level initial jobs prepare you better than being in a cubicle pool of drone associates that never get to see the big picture.

I got more scholarship money offered from Alabama than I did LSU or Tulane.

No. Went to LSU.

I ultimately wanted to come back to Baton Rouge, so LSU was the better choice. There were also some family reasons I stayed. But I really liked Alabama and it wasn't an easy choice.

While this is true, where you went to law school has a tremendous impact on what kinds of opportunities you have in those first five years. It’s not everything, but it can be pretty important for shaping one’s future career’s early trajectory.

There is certainly truth in this. I went to Duke because I could, I have always believed having the best educational CV one can have is a good thing. That said law is still very much who you know. Out of the 20+ associates I hired over my career 90% of them were hired due to communication from a third party.

My first job out of school my grandmother got me. She was at her weekly "beauty shop" visit and mentioned to one of her friends there I had graduated law school. She happened to be the mother of a partner in a firm in my home town. That mom called her son and told him to call me, he did and within a week I had my dream job. I had turned down offers and missed out on others I really wanted but my grandmother got me a job that hadn't even been opened for application. I learned a couple of years later from the partner that they never really even looked at my resume as he had been instructed by his mother to hire me.

Who knew that blue hairs ran the law world.

I only practiced a few years although that’s my own fault.

But LSU had a higher bar passage rate and the tuition was probably 80-90 percent cheaper at that time.

Nice. Yes, networking and connections in addition to where you went definitely helps.

Well, it's racist to take money away from "the people" so, theres that.
