Kids that arent in school yet?? Wife working or staying at home?
Rent something close to work bud. Do it for a couple yrs. Get familiar with the area better, and you can be there for your wife/kids more, not sitting in your car commuting. Once established, and use to it all then find a place. Perhaps by then you can afford more.

Great point. I missed that.
Renting in the loop is very doable if you don't have to worry about sending kids to school.
