Nick Saban is nothing if not a smart coach.
His goal was the NFL, he tried it. It did not go well. It was not, necessarily, coaching deficiencies, it was his personality and the dynamic he created. I have no doubt that on a purely technical level, Nick Saban can coach in the NFL, he has done it. His preparation and organization are first rate.

His personality in the office, the sort of "don't-talk-to-me" attitude that he has been rumored to have, and the constant berating of players in practice and on game-day do not go well with professional, paid athletes. That is, to me, the long and the short of the NFL situation.

The NFL is now a very different beast than it was before Saban went to Kent State.
