Aren’t those cities where the coastal traffic would go? I can’t imagine people going out of their way by hundreds of miles just to make a giant loop away from certain cities.

At the end of the day, I prefer to drive on the US or state highways anyway. Some of the towns have character and it won’t add too much time if you were going to be in heavy interstate traffic anyway.
