The other LSU runner is Ralph Fabian, an excellent sprinter. He was better in 220 yd dash - would just nip Cannon at tape. Don't remember their times in 220, but were very good.
Sorry didn't see above post.

Purvis was a short-legged, shifty runner...not a particularly speedy guy.
Yea, I saw someone had clarified that before I had posted this comment...my "old man" memory just seemed to think the face looked like Scooter...I keep trying to recall and should look it up, but didn't Purvis return punts for the Go Team or Bandits?? Maybe I'm wrong.

Purvis was a member of the GO team & did return punts - don't think he played with Bandits.

Supposedly they had some hot shot track star from Kansas come to campus when Cannon was a freshman and they raced and BC beat him by about a yard
Interesting. Could that have been Billie Mills the famous barefoot Indian runner? Same time frame but never heard of this. Kansas did rule track and field back then, so it could have been any of their guys.
Immediately thought Gale Sayers (Kansas Comet) but he was early 1960s I believe. Jim Ryun was late 60's.

Seem to remember at some meet were high schoolers and college participation that Cannon wanted to run Bobby Morrow and Bill Wodhouse but would not run him - believe they saw him run earlier.
Morrow was from Abaline Christen, don't remember where Woodhouse was from. Morrow ran 9.3 and I think Woodhouse did also, 9.3 was world record then.

Those are cool memories. The old fashioned 'let's race' kind of stuff

yes he did a run a 9.5 in sulphur and i think he held the record for years. are you from sulphur?

Yes, you're right. In high school Cannon would bet his friends he could out run their cars! Some of the car were not quick, but Billy would win most times!

The ref out ran him on the punt return

And the training regiment wasn't what it is today. It was all natural

Heard on the radio yesterday that he ran a 9.4 100m
It was 100 YARDS back then. That translates to around a 10.2-10.4 100 M
Probably pretty fast back then, now it would barely win a good high school meet

Cannon was totally gassed at the end of that run. The night was extremely humid and the was a real "slug it out" game .... Kick on first or second down and play defense. See him getting oxygen after.
By the way that ref was not a member of the officials that night; he did not have a ticket so put on his officials uniform and walked in! Got caught in moment on sideline!

That's right but I like the quote of the "fastest shot- putter" in nation. 9.4 and 58-59' unusual.

I entered LSU in 1958 also. He trained under Alvin Roy, but I don't believe it started before he was enrolled at LSU. If you remember, back then freshmen played on the freshmen team. This was the rule...no exceptions...basically a wasted year. I was not yet on campus for his freshman year, but I recall hearing that Cannon was about 195 as a freshman and bulked-up in his varsity years. I also remember that he was shiftier runner early on at LSU...lost some of that as he gained weight.

No, that's still very fast. Hershel Walker's personal best was 10.23 and he was pretty fast for a big back for comparison. Also a college sprinter. A very large one

Hershal was a world class sprinter as far as I can remember. Best running back in college football ever.

Really? You do understand that Billy Cannon played Pro Footbal and was All-AFL and blacks played pro ball too. Cannon was a great player no matter who he competed against.

A 9.6 hundred yard dash is extremely fast even today. How some of you come up with absolutely stupid shite is amazing.
