Nothing. What's the big deal?

You are not looking at the big picture. Imagine a population of people with vouchers worth $10-15,000 a year shopping for a school. Thousands of schools would open in hopes of attracting these consumers just as there are thousands of grocery stores. The consumers, shoppers, will make decisions on which schools they want just as they make decisions on all other services today--performance in delivering the services the consumer wants.

Lots of people want their kids in schools with great football teams. Let them. Lots of people want schools that can deal with their mentally challenged kids. On and on.

There are teachers out there now that faced with the opportunity to run their classrooms in a different manner would do just that.

I assume this is also an idealistic world where discipline is not affected or influenced by lawsuits, right?

I had an inner city student transfer into my class halfway through September one year. He had an aunt who lived in an apartment in our district and his older brother murdered someone in a drug deal gone bad in Ensley (probably the worst neighborhood in Birmingham). So thinking life was like Fresh Prince, his mother sent him to a predominantly white area (about 80% white) to get a good education.

He ruined the class. He was loud. Couldn’t hold still. He made the other students uncomfortable. He made me uncomfortable. He was disrespectful and distrusting of any authority figure. He needed constant one-on-one direction to help him understand the material and keep him on task. He sucked up my attention most days and it took until December for enough crap to happen to have him sent to the alternative school. And that was at least him moving to to the district.

I had other students with similar backgrounds cause similar problem. Perhaps that’s merely anecdotal, but I would be rather upset as a parent if I bought a nice house in a nice area and my kids’ education was disrupted due to kids with vouchers coming and going as they please. I think you’re underestimating the reality of kids from low income environments mixing with those from high income ones.

Conservatives deemed “racists” by pop culture are the ones supporting systems which allow minorities to escape bad schools.

Vouchers are the first step.
