Not buying new. This is just about a 5 year boat. Then I'll need something bigger as my boys get older.

I kept a Subaru for 5 years with no issues at all. All I ever did was change the oil. Key is don’t run it like an outboard and realize that it is a car engine and you will have no problems. Rarely turned over 4000 rpms.

actually cheaper than what gatortail quoted me for a similar setup.

Same. People say the Prodigy's are so expensive but they haven't priced a gatortail rig. I knew I was getting a prodigy but just for shits and gigs I went ahead and got a quote from gatortail. Gatortail would not put on gatorglide, they would not put shark eye running lights, I didn't get a quote with interior lighting, underwater lights, I don't think they offer recessed flooring, no blind, didn't include 4 cup holders and maybe something else. With ALL of that, the prodigy was STILL cheaper and Prodigy's black grass paint job is better than anything gatortail has. I got way more for less and I feel like prodigy makes a better boat in general. Gatortail motors are unbeatable though.

If you planning on using the boat for more than duck hunting, get a surface drive.

If it’s going to be mainly used for duck hunting, get a mud boat.

what are the cons for a mud boat for frogging, riding in the bayou/swamp with 2 or 3 people, etc?

Con is that you have less room in a mudboat. It’s shorter and not as wide so your old carrying capacity sucks.

Unless you get a huge mudboat with a big Motor.

Is this considered mud boat or surface drive?

Anybody ever change out their motor by season? Seems like if you kept it all tiller wouldn't be too bad with a hoist?

1st two are surface drive, 3rd is outboard

ETA: that 1st one is almost my exact boat coming in next week.

-no fishtail
-no troll motor
-add light bar
-GTRXD instead of the black death

No one knows what area you are hunting/frogging/riding that can change what works better. But there is a reason you see 100 surface drives to 1 mudboat these days, its just way more versatile.

It depends on what you want it for and what you plan on going through. Mud boat would be better suited to Lake Boeuf.

Own a surface Drive, driven both, mud boat was easier to drive in Lake Boeuf. Put both boats in the wax, different story.

Also, you don't have to spend all that money these people are saying you have to spend on these boats. That's one of the problems with this industry.

If you had a budget of around $8k, you can get a nice used rig for that price. I may know someone here that mentioned selling a subaru mud boat. Come holler at me.

That first pic looks like lease I use to frog on. We ran a Waymaker and it did great. Instant reverse with that Technidrive was the ticket.

What makes a mud boat then? Jet drive, inboard, etc? A SwampShark?

I just assumed any flat bottomed aluminum with an air cooled motor was a mud boat

you're kind of splitting hairs dude.

The common nomenclature for the boats you posted is "surface drive"

The commonly referred to "mudboat" is more like this:

I have a 16 foot aluminum mudboat with a 35 briggs and a ZF Hurth clutch. I can go anywhere in Lake Bouef. My seat is on top of the motor so it sucks to pick up decoys or frog by myself. It is awesome to pick up decoys with more people, since I don't have to do it and can keep my hands warm.

I have a 48 inch bottom so I have lots of room. I have a back deck and plenty of dry storage.

My 8 year and I get about 23mph with fishing gear. I had 5 adults with shell buckets, 2 ice chests full of beer, guns and about 80 decoys and was going 13mph.
