Shotgun with birdshot is perfect.

whats budget?
id go with shotgun. Mossberg spx 930 is a semi auto that holds 8 rounds
if money is no object id go benelli M2
if you want a cheap pump action you cant go wrong with a Mossberg 590 or a Remington 870
always use 00 buck....if you have to pull it out youre using it to eliminate the threat. birdshot will piss them off

Remington Youth Model 20 gauge
Short barrel makes it easier to maneuver in hallways.
What kind of shot you use would depend on how many people live with you and so on. I'd use bird shot if you have kids. The odds of somebody having a gun fight with you and needing knockdown power inside your house is low.

Next question. Since i have never owned a gun before do i just show up at the store with drivers license and purchase gun? then wait a few days for background check and all or do i get gun same day? Figured i would ask before heading to store. I do have kids thats why i never owned a gun before.

depends on your background check. Could be an immediate proceed or you could get delayed

wal mart sells 870s. you can get the barrel cut down by a gunsmith for cheap.

.300 WSM
Thats what I use for deer hunting and I always drop the deer in their tracks.
And if they run away down the street you should be able to take them out up to a few hundred yards if you have a halfway decent scope

If you’re on a budget there’s a Mexican made Mossberg called a Maverick 88. The 18” barrel version holds 5 shells in the magazine and 1 in the chamber. The 20” barrel, one I bought, holds 7 shells in the magazine. I recommend #4 buckshot, it’s kinda hard to find, but will kill without over penetration.

so glad you got 27 recs for a home defense shotgun. I have nothing bad to say about a home defense shotgun but i also think every red blooded american should also have a handgun and be comfortable enough with the usage of one. a full size 9 mm can get you up to 15-20 shots with one magazine. They are easier to carry, more versatile in usage, easier to hide and place in different areas of home etc. I'm not trying to talk you out of a shotgun but i think you should definitely consider adding a full sized 9mm to the arsenal as well. There are many reliable handguns that can be had from $300ish-$500ish.
Your cheaper home defense shotguns are likely mostly pump shotguns. the pumping action needed for multiple shots might not always be a natural function for a novice shooter in a stressful situation neither.

many things can cause a delay. For example, if your name is similar to a person that would not be able to purchase a firearm you could get a delay.
