I wonder if John Mayer won the bid on it. I know he is a huge watch collector.
The final two in at 15mil+ were someone in Asia and someone bidding in French, the one bidding in French via phone won at 15.5 + buyers premium. Everyone I thought would be serious bidders got blown out of the room when the first live bid came in a 10m.
While there still is speculation that Rolex may have bought it I continue to doubt it and unless they build a public museum we may never know.

Why would they buy it and not show it in a museum or use it in their advertising? Would they really spend $17 million just so the CEO and his friends can say they touched it?

No, a real baller wears Lange and Sohne, Audemars Piguet watches are for slumming.

Rolex doesn't have a public museum and they are not known for using historic watches in ads nor is PN's likeness used often except for "his" dressing etc.
The main reason watch manufacturers buy their own watches is to strengthen their values in the secondary market and has been used to good effect most notably by Patek Phillipe though they hide behind a mask of buying for their museums/collections. While the buyer certainly could be Rolex (bidding in French to add a little mystery) it would be out of character for them but they are a very secretive company owned by a charitable trust and do a lot of odd things. In the end the early Daytona market has been wild for a decade and I am not sure this will add fuel since it is such a unique watch with the vast majority of the value coming from the provenance. If we don't find out who bought it in the next few weeks I doubt we will know for a long time.

The first automatic Daytona and also the first Daytona consumers actually bought and was the first watch Rolex really controlled the volume on. That resulted in steel Daytonas being difficult to buy which is happening again with the new ceramic bezel 1165XX watches. Yours has the 4030 movement based on the Zenith El Primero movement. Cool watch and the white dial is nicer than the black dial. Wear it in good health.

I don't see any reason to spend more than 8 or 9 thousand on a watch.

Yeah, the Steve McQueen rolex is a really big deal for the same reason, iirc.
The Rolex reference most closely "connected" to Steve McQueen is the 1655 orange hand Explorer and also has an Italian connection like the PN Daytona. Years ago a famous Italian auction house started calling the 1655 the Steve McQueen but it was a complete mistake since McQueen (as best as anyone can tell) never owned a 1655 but you always saw him with a 5512 or 5513 Submariner on and it was as ubiquitous in photos as his Persols.
The watch most closely associated with McQueen is the blue face left hand wind square Heuer Monaco he wore during the filming of the movie Lemans. The actual watch last traded hands for ~800K but it is important to note it was a watch he picked for the role it was never his personal watch. In true (now) Tag Heuer style they have released several Steve McQueen variations on the Monaco and have used his likeness in a lot of advertising.
The so called McQeen Explorer

I have a Z Blue Milgauss and a Batman as well along with a Polar, Hulk, DSSD, last gen SD along with two 6263s. I kinda want a ceramic Daytona but refuse to play the games and there are plenty of other watches out there I want as well that are easy to buy.
My Rolex grail is an odd duck, the vintage 6541 Milgauss but I never grabbed one before they hit house prices. I looked over several back when you could get them for $1000.

Believe it or not, the watch shop over on Florida boulevard actually had an original honeycomb milgauss with lightning bolt hand - the owner of the store showed it to me - and the owner of the watch, who received it from his grandfather, requested that the original markers be replaced with diamond studs. I was absolutely aghast. It was not in great condition, but still.
With respect to the Paul Newman Daytona - sure, it is a piece of history. However, for that chunk of change, I would much, much, much prefer the second most expensive watch ever auctioned - the stainless steel Patek 1518. Personally, I do not really understand hanging your hat on another man's provenance.
I am somewhat surprised, in lieu of the Daytona selling for such a high price, that Jackie O's tank did not sell for more.

On top of it's significance in the watch community, I'm willing to bet 100% of the money is going to the foundation. When charity is involved in these auctions, the price goes up exponentially.

The two wealthiest men I know (one of whom is a big LSU donor) would wear a watch like this:

interesting stuff.
Personal preference aside, which few watches have the potential to have big increases in the future?

That's downright painful to read especially doing it to a 6541! A bit of trivia, the Milgauss hand is not called a lightning bolt, though that is what you usually hear, it is actually called a Thunderbolt hand, though I don't know why.
