There's a written law that if you're driving you shouldn't be in the left lane unless you're passing so that people moving can pass you on the left.

Unfortunately this is violated even more often than the unwritten escalator rule.

And when the monthly thread bitching about drivers who drive slow in the left lane comes up, you can complain about it there. This thread is about escalator etiquette.
