You don't need to do that with the better ones. The shut off completely as needed and still monitor the battery. Keeps things more consistent for the battery and no chance of forgetting to plug it back in.

So I’ve gotten my battery tender (Deltran) now. Some reviews that I’ve read say that they leave the cables connected to the battery and just unplug the unit from the cables if they need to use the vehicle. Does it not get too hot under the hood for the cables if the engine’s running?
