Schools are really pushing just that. My daughter is in 5th grade and starting in 1st grade has had to read for 20-30 minutes per day. Son is in 8th, and he has to read for 30-45 minutes per day. A lot of nights, it is their only homework.
I think it is wonderful. Both now love to read, and read much more than the required amount.

My children go to a school that is also really big on this. As a third grader they are required to read 1 book every 3 days. It's third grade reading but they really push this and it is his only homework most days. When I go to pick him up from after care, you see all these kids sitting around reading so they don't have to do it when they get home. I think it's great.
