Wrestling is 100% the best base and background for an mma career. Wrestlers tend to be naturally stronger than others in their weight class and are used to cutting weight.

Relating that to Zack vs Slater, Slater was a highly decorated wrestler going against someone with zero training in any kind of discipline. Zack would have gotten double legged and put on his back in a second.

Wrestlers are no joke, especially back then before mma training was popular. So unless Zack had some jui jitsu skills, he had no chance.

Slater always had the advantage in their fight. Maybe he just didn't want to hurt Zack. Remember when he came in at the last second to wrestle that Valley guy so Screech didn't have to and Slater beat that guy's arse easily without even warming up. LINK
