Yeah, by useless junk I meant things like crappy guns and armor.
The other stuff stays in the work bench. I think I'm getting the hang of it.

I believe you can store guns and armor in the workbench too. If the settlement gets attacked, your settlers will find a better weapon as long as they have the ammo for it.
