I use Gaia app. If you save the maps before you get out of service, the gps and map stay referenced very well. They have national forest maps, aerials, topos, and all kinds of backgrounds. It’s worth the money.

I use Map Plus. Free, easy to use, and you can store all your .kmz files in it

can you do a test run by downloading like your neighborhood and throw a few pins here n there? Turn your data/wifi off and just leave gps on.

Used the offline feature for camping. I don't believe it gave me a location marker where I was, but you could see the satellite view if you knew where you were.
