Tomlin says he wanted it to be an all or nothing team decision. That's it. He doesn't criticize Villanueva.

I think Tomlin thought he found a solution to keep his team out of the political media headlines, but now because of Villanueva(not saying he was wrong), the Steelers have moved to the front.
Exactly. I'm proud of Villanueva, but I also understand why a head coach would want the entire team to do one thing or he other. Villanueva made it look like the rest of the Steelers were protesting the anthem, and that isn't the case at all.

We, as football fans, know Villanueva's story. This now is going to possibly tear a team apart in some way. Tomlin was trying to prevent that, I feel.
You dont think he already had by placing Villanueva in such a position? We are talking about a West Point grad who served multiple tours and has a bronze star.. A guy that has been very careful and respectful with his words regarding this situation. frick Tomlin for putting him in this spot. He is a leader on the team for christs sake.

But it doesn't appear that he actually complained about Villanueva's actions; it's just putting a spin on what he said.
That is not a good look for a coach.

suggest you read his press conference transcript and avoid slanted articles from Fox News, MSN, etc.
My response was more directed to sms as to why he's receiving down votes.
But, come on. Without the slanted news flash, just going off the transcript, the context that he wasn't happy about Villanueva was there. That's gonna be a bad look no matter what, especially considering who the player is.

I don't see a problem with this statement at all.

Like I said, I was looking for a hundred percent participation. We’re going to be respectful of our football team....except when it comes to Alejandro Villanueva. He is a decorated, three-tour veteran of the country. His service and commitment to our country is vastly superior and comes before the respect of our professional athletes.

Wanting the entire team to do the same thing is a perfectly reasonable wish. He had ample opportunity to throw Villanueva under the bus, but he didn't.

Tomlin missed an opportunity to be the GOAT hero for damn near both sides of this issue.
"We wanted 100% team collaboration on this issue, which is what we got. Villaneuva stood for the anthem as a former Ranger, which supersedes this situation as a member of our military. Our players understood that."

He said he didn't want his players to be used as political tools in this situation. That's why he was looking for 100% participation by staying in the locker room. He was not attacking Villanueva.

it'd be nice to get back to a time where you could just report a story and let people form their own opinions from the facts. That story is so pathetically slanted.

False.
He's saying he wanted the entire team to do it together. He's not criticizing Villanueva for coming out of the tunnel nor would he be criticizing James Harrison for coming out and taking a knee. He would have preferred the entire team do it together.
Given the circus this has become, I'm not sure how anyone could disagree with that wish.

It bugs me that the Steelers and Tomlin did EXACTLY what the MSB wants - just play football and leave the political statements off the field - yet they're still criticizing Tomlin/the team.

He's saying he wanted the entire team to do it together.
Again, I don't think he had poor intentions, but it was just a really bad choice of words.

You cant see how staying in for the anthem during this time wouldnt be construed one way or the other.. It blew up in their face because they put the wrong person in a awkward position without getting him on board. Tomlin is covering his arse at this point because the organization has egg on its face and he made it worse by his opening line.
