i agree, and i think it is for the same reasons, but one is losing eyeballs and the other isn't

there's a few differences that might explain that...one of them is ironic since these colleges are crawling with SJW activists.

Someone let me know when it becomes less political and maybe I will tune in...but doubtful since there are so many other ways to get highlights, stats and info.

But isnt this just a corporation trying to protect/retain its audience/revenue stream. If they thought young people (future revenue) were moving right thats what you would see. All this SJW stuff isnt aimed at us, its 15-25 year olds.

You really think that's what's going on?

It's not like "young people" just suddenly became more liberal on the whole last year. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Has more to do with the fact that the NFL's on-field product has become borderline unwatchable imo. For instance I bet CFB ratings haven't seen the same decline.

Corporations care about money, and ESPN is hemorrhaging money right now. They have to do two things to ensure the market for the next generation:

Get on the formats and devices that generation will use;
Appeal to their politics (which before social media was a huge no no for sports).

totally agree. i do think the "protests" are the catalyst though. However, after years of money, time, attention, intense enthusiasm etc. that large portions would just walk away, and more are following

the product isn't as great as it used to be because just 2 years ago, the NFL was teflon, now they have a sustained ratings slide

The CFB game has changed as well and that's scary.

The 18-30 demographic that are big SJW/activists types don't care about sports.

Maybe not the same but I think they have declined.

You have a whole group of fans that want to fire coaches that used to have statues built. No one really cares about the game anymore, just pissed off if they dont win...not only win but dominate.

The only programs that seem to have excitement are those that are new to the winning game....Clemson for example. Or have returned to winning ways i.e. Michigan.

I will probably watch the Super Bowl. It's all I ever watch of the NFL. I wanted to start watching more games with Alabama players in them last year, but then the whole sitting for the anthem thing started so I decided against it. I hope the Bama players do well, but I just can't support the NFL as an organization.

This is because of them doing this:

Appeal to their politics

I simply can't fathom the idea that there are people who would not otherwise watch a sporting event would suddenly decide to do so because the network broadcasting that sporting event is "appealing to their politics". Seems rather ludicrous on its face, but what the hell do I know, my business is not hemorrhaging profits.

They'll watch the the first game, or attend the first game, etc etc etc. Like what happened with Michael Sam jerseys. They sold like hotcakes when he first started playing, and SJWs went to watch him play and whatever else, but they just don't care about the game so they weren't ever going to keep up with it after the frenzy died off.

It could also be the lack of parity, inconsistent attribution of player discipline, and the fact that college football is far more entertaining.

Not on the first weekend. They were up and I'd bet they'll be up this weekend with those 4 big games in prime time. More big time schools are playing other big time schools out of conference so that adds eyeballs.
