Also consider water absorbed by the coffee filter. We use 2 filters (above and below coffee grounds) and this seems to eliminate grounds getting into coffee pot.

We use a Bunn A-10 and always get the same out as we put in. We only add water in 4 cup increments (4+4+2 = 10 cups)to prevent grounds from getting into the coffee. Your loss of 1/2 cup of water has to be due to evaporation. I would suggest your coffee maker is too hot. The Bunn and other brands brew at an optimum temperature below the boiling point of water.
