What's the harm in periodic (monthly?) audits of levees & pumps by outside engineers?

Seems like the 2 most critical components of the NOLA infrastructure are run by local cronies whose incompetence never rises to the surface until those services are actually relied on.
Much like college football bowls use other league's refs to minimize potential bias, put a half dozen outside engineering firms on a permanent retainer and rotate them.
hold them accountable for their reports.
pay them well.
make the results public.

The first rule of working for the public, is not making things public.

The problem is that the city gets to select the winner. Quality and competency will likely have little to do in the selection process.

You think these govt agencies want a third party to call out their corruption and incompetence?

The corrupt would be exposed and sent to jail, that's the harm.
It's time to make politicians fear the people again.

Sounds like a waste of money. Need to reserve funds for more important things like more statue removals.

agreed. our generators are tested weekly. seems like regular testing of these systems is doable.

Think the public would agree to a tax increase to have this critical check performed?
I'm not disagreeing, but it seems when it comes time to pay for services, the public hates taxes.

Couldn't be any worse than the current government solution.

In the case of the bowl games, sometimes you get refs that are not as good and they blow calls and shite.

Nothing. First thing that will happen is a city official will take them to Galatoires for a thousand dollar meal and drinks, then some strip clubs, then offer them the world to sign a paper saying the equipment is good to go.
Same exact way they handled the levee inspections before Katrina.

Don't the feds inspect those?

I would think that would be a huge hurdle

Just raid the slush funds or whatever funds they used for statue removal. BTW, did any of the "anonymous donors" ever pay the city back?

Any more questions?

Does this outside firm have landrieu in the name? Of not, I don't see this happening.

What funds the S&WB? Any state or fed funds?
