Meridian and Hattiesburg are part of Essential air Service by the DOT. So instead of flying two routes from DFW, AA just combines the route with a stop.

That's interesting. I didn't know airlines did this. It just seems like the airports are so close together that it's pointless to even operate out of the Hattiesburg/Laurel airport
