The 3-4 defense traditionally relies in a dominant NG

I am excited to see what Aranda can do when the NG is never blown off the ball. I think that begins this year. It's why I think the defense has a chance to be better this year by the end of the season.

Hopefully Gilmore and Ed can lock it down.

Shelvin and Alexander were both ranked as top 50 overall prospect as nose guards. Hopefully Shelvin can get cleared and the 2 can live up to the hype

There are two different schools of 3-4 defense. I'm no expert but as I understand it, the one gap 3-4 (which Aranda runs) doesn't require a massive space eater at nose tackle.

Furthermore, were in 2-4-5 alignment far more than anything else anyway.

Which the offenses we face are driving.

What I was excited to see is - by the end of the season (maybe it was just the bowl game), we started to get either 0 looks (or at least faux 0 looks) and I think Aranda is on to something there. It's passively aggressive and this causes a slight freeze of the offense off the snap.

I imagine this year, we'll see it more.

Why are they recruiting 350 lb nose guards, then?

This. My understanding has always been that NT is much less important than it is in a 3-4 like Sabans.

I don't know, maybe because they're the best in the country out of HS?

Because sometimes a good defense will play 2 gap to throw off the offense or to stuff the run

Or these 350lb nose guards are in high school shape and not college shape. Maybe the coaches project the kid losing 30-40 pounds and being a more one-gap player.

Because he is a beast and the #1 recruit in the state? They can always adjust the scheme.

Would you not recruit the best RB in the country (who is in your backyard) just because you're a pass first team?

For the record, I think Tyler Shelvin is down to like 325 - practically svelte for a man that big.

They are simply recruiting who they think the best recruits are. If you think a Saban nose guard is the same as what Aranda wants, you simply don't understand the defense and you don't believe Aranda bc he has made that point very clear on multiple occasions.

Massive nose tackles are just not as important with spread offenses en vogue as they used to be. However, it will still be very valuable against bama and arkansas.

Not only are these guys big, but they're athletic enough to penetrate and not just plug the gap.

That's why they're elite.

Oh. I don't recall that from last year. Did we do it in the bowl game?

There are a bunch of different flavors. Most people think of Belichick's 34, which is all space eaters and the defensive line plays read/react while two gapping.

Then you have Wade Phillips, who one gaps and has actually used relatively small nose tackles. Jay Ratliff is an extreme example of this, dude barely weighed 300 pounds.

They aren't recruiting 350 lb noseguards. If he's referring to Tyler Shelvin he was the best player in state last recruiting cycle and Coach O wanted him in the 320-330 range.

Ed Alexander wasn't 350 either. And none of the 2018 DTs they are recruiting are that big. Dare Rosenthal is around 330 but he's also 6'8".
