Did we do it in the bowl game?

Yes, at least once. I reacted to it at the time.

There are two different schools of 3-4 defense. I'm no expert but as I understand it, the one gap 3-4 (which Aranda runs) doesn't require a massive space eater at nose tackle.

This. Read up.

So we want the ng getting blown off the ball? So confusing.

No, not at all. What you're thinking of is a traditional 2-gap NT...that requires a big, space-water type that won't get pushed off the line and can "cover" both gaps on either side of the center.

A one gap NT on the other hand, is only responsible for one gap (on either side of the center, however the play is called) and is expected to get more penetration/pressure than his 2-gap counterpart. I kind of think of it like we just play three 3-4 DEs with the middle guy being only slightly bigger.

That's my understand at least.

The defensive lineman transfer from Texas Tech is the perfect nose Guard for Aranda's system

there are 3 actually.
3-4 okie front
3-4 eagle front
3-4 underfront
aranda uses 3-4 underfront where the NT lines up O shade technique or 1 technique.

Wade Phillips and a few other DCs in the NFL employ a 3-4 under or shade alignment, where instead of having the big space-eating NT playing heads up over the center in a zero technique with two-gap responsibility, you have a lighter but quicker tackle play off one shoulder of the center in a one-tech, one-gap role. In the first, the NT ties up a couple of blockers. In the second, the NT can get gap penetration. This means the ILB to the other one gap side has to be more ready to take on that blocker.

Why are they recruiting 350 lb nose guards, then?

If memeory serves, Aranda also mixes in the 4-3 and we were talking about a heavy mix of it when it seemed we were thin at linebacker before last year.
