Daily bump.
I'm probably going to call this Friday. I don't want to wait too long and possibly have Delta not provide me a full flight credit.

I just got a text from my friend that is registered to get updates from the sands, and The sands only sustained landscaping and a little water damage. They will reopen 9/23 and shore club opens 9/30.

Sands at grace bay?! That would be amazing! I called cap one travel and they aren't giving us waivers for end of October so far. So looks like we may be going there after all. I would love to get these updates?

ETA they meaning delta

Found it:

That gives us over a month of having the resort open to get shite back to normal. I am assuming we will get some updates as travelers make their way back there. Somerset is right next door so that's a good sign!!

By the way, Delta wasn't giving waivers for our time period yet, if at all.

Looks like the resorts were wisely built to make it through. But the staff's personal homes may have all been devastated.

The dive shop emailed me back and said the hoped to be open by the end of October but with the power down they can't fill the tanks. We will see what strides the island makes in the next few weeks.

If delta doesn't offer us waivers, it looks like we will be going there, whether everything is up and running or not.

The peripheral businesses would be my worry. The resorts will be up and running but will anyone else?

I know man, kinda sucky. Nothing we can really do about it. Maybe the hotel will give us a discount? Who knows: as long as the beach is ok and there is beer, can't be so bad

Enjoy. If the ferry is running to North Caicos and the causeway to Middle Caicos wasn't destroyed you should ride the ferry over, rent a car and drive to Middle. Some incredible beaches there.

This is Mudjin Harbor with the appropriately named Dragon Cay in the background.

I've found that the service people in the customer service departments of airlines have more power than they claim they do.
If you are NICE to them.... and I mean genuinely, sincerely, actually nice. They will break their "rules" and do stuff for you that they normally don't.

For example, we had a flight booked to SLC for a ski trip, but they changed the flight time from 6PM to 2PM.
Well, that was going to force me to take a day of vacation. Therefore, I'd rather take the 11am flight, but that costs $200/pp. And I had booked 4 flights ($800).

So, I call up the airline and am super friendly and nice while I explain that their change in flight time has inconvenienced me and I'd like an alternate flight.
The guy leaves and comes back on the line and asks what reason I have for wanting to change to the 11am flight.

Here's the cool part....
I said, "Ok. Because you are not telling me 'No', I assume that there is an answer that would allow me to rebook without the fees. Now, I don't know what you want to hear... but let's just pretend that I gave you the right answer." And I engage in full radio silence while I let him think about it. And after a long pause, he laughs and rebooks the flights.

I hadn't really thought about the ancillary businesses being unusable. Bars, Dive shops, etc.
But, we are only going for like 3-4 days. So, it can't be that big of a deal.
All I really need is 2-3 restaurants, one bar, and one dive shop to be up and running by November.

I'm on the fence still really.
If it looks like the hotel is gonna be fine. We'll likely still go.
They are supposed to post a detailed status update today. So, we'll see what that says.

If it looks dire, I'll probably do a song and dance for the airline next week and change our booking to Cayman.

Turks and Caicos Islands

Irma flooded roads, ripped off roofs, and took down trees and power lines. Many hotels reported that they were without power and water on this British overseas territory, which, besides tourism, also relies on offshore financial services and fishing, according to the Central Intelligence Agency. The Sands plans to reopen on Sept. 23. The Palms and the Shore Club plan to reopen on Sept. 30. Club Med Turkoise is not taking new guests through Sept. 30. Alexandra Resort, Blue Haven Resort and Beach House will be closed for arrivals through Oct. 8. Gansevoort Turks & Caicos is not accepting new guests until Nov. 1. The damage to the island is still being assessed.

Doesn't exactly sound promising. I mean they will be open but it may suck otherwise. Guess we will see

Turks is the least favorite of the islands personally. It is full of Canadians and really not much to do.

They could be considered more appealing to an older crowd. Fantastic beaches and restaurants. The snorkeling is mostly conch diving as the bottom is nothing but sand. There are fun things to do for the adventurous that are willing to visit neighboring North and Middle Caicos and Fish Fry on Thursday night is a blast on Provo. I've heard diving The Wall is fantastic but haven't experienced it.

It looks like it may get another hit this week from Maria which could effectively end any vacation dreams in the near future.
