Videos of recent high-profile assaults spread across the news give the impression that the French Quarter is more dangerous than ever and people are voicing new fears about visiting, living or working in the Quarter. That is perception – what is reality? And why are the two often different?
The spike in random crime in the French Quarter is real, but the statistics show that simple and armed robberies and shootings in the French Quarter are actually down significantly. The phrase “perception is reality” is a familiar way to justify one’s fear, but the phrase can be misleading.
The definition of reality is “the state of things as they actually exist.” Perception is, defined as becoming aware of something through the senses, or a mental impression.” Perception and reality do not always sync up, but perception drives our actions.
According to new statistics gathered under the strict federal consent decree, show that simple robbery in the French Quarter is down 42%, armed robbery is down 45% and shootings are down 73%. But those dramatic decreases in crime do not match the perception of crime in the Quarter.

Made up numbers to alleviate the fears of potential tourists.

Simple robbery goes down because ain't nobody got time to wait 3 hours for nopd to come and take a report for a purse theft when it will amount to nada.

If you club someone over the head and rob them on the other side of Rampart it doesn't count.

Somebody help me, please.
Does this mean only crime that has had some type of"settlement" is counted in the data?
What does "gathered under the strict consent decree" mean?

Aside from not even providing a link to the statistics, he doesn't even address a timeline.
Down from when? Last year? The 90's? Katrina?
That's pretty shitty reporting.
