Never use a debit card. Use a credit card. Better protection and if the number is stolen they're stealing from the credit card company not your bank account.
Pay attention to your credit card purchases and report anything you don't recognize.

this. My debit card was skimmed like 3x in a 2 year period and I got tired of dealing with it.
Credit card only. Pay it off before interest accrues. Functionally the same and you're better protected against fraud.

yeah I use AMEX pretty much everywhere and if something happens, they are great at handling it
