I've been to both, and I'd opt for USVI(St John specifically) over Hawaii because the flight is much, much shorter. The flight home from Hawaii is brutal. I also prefer the warmer waters of the Caribbean to the Pacific Ocean.
Hawaii is really cool though. Either trip will be nice.

I've heard similar remarks about the travel length. If you are in the Eastern/Central zones, I've heard the jet lag in Hawaii can make the vacay a rough for a few days. You don't have that problem going to the USVI.
I've only been to the USVI/BVI. Beautiful, fun, warm waters. But I am sure Hawaii would offer more overall (Pearl Harbor, volcanoes, Hawaiian culture). The only downside being the cost & travel lengths.
