Over-the-Counter Hearing Aid Act (house bill with bipartisan support)

Can't wait to see the scumbag lobbyists and ear doctors come out against this.

This is sane, bipartisan legislation. Let's hope it passes. Anyone who knows someone with hearing loss knows how expensive hearing aids are.

This legislation, part of the FDA funding package that was passed out of the House on July 12 and that has moved to the Senate, would create a new FDA-regulated category of over-the-counter hearing aids to vastly improve access to a helpful technology. If it is passed, people could buy devices to improve their hearing much more cheaply and easily, without the need for a prescription.

The bipartisan Over-the-Counter Hearing Aid Act of 2017 would have cascading positive effects for hearing loss.
First, it would harness the recent explosion in consumer communications technology to improve hearing devices. The phone in my pocket has far more advanced technology compared with a prescription hearing aid at a fraction of the cost. The prescription-hearing-aid industry is dominated by six companies (only one of which is American) that have not kept pace with the consumer-electronics industry. Features such as noise cancelation that are standard in cheaper gadgets are often add-ons with prescription hearing aids.
Second, competition would drive down costs. For many Americans, prescription hearing aids are their third-most-expensive purchase, after a house and a car. To increase hearing-aid use, this needs to change. There are myriad examples of consumer technologies that have plummeted in price because of competitive manufacturing and economics of scale. Televisions, personal computers, and portable storage devices are prime examples. But hearing aids remain stuck at exorbitant prices. Opening up the market to new entrants, including innovative American companies such as Bose and Apple, would help greatly.

Not sure we really needed a bill for this although I'm not against it.
As a hearing loss person, there are LOTS of hearing aids out there that do a great job you can get without going to an ENT or Audiologist.
Hell, I drunk purchased one off of wish.com one night for $15 that's a behind the ear model that works great.

That's awesome news! Thanks for sharing.
My soon-to-be 10-year-old son spontaneously lost most of the hearing in his right ear about three years ago, presumably as a result of an ear infection. Since he hears fine out of his left ear and it hasn't affected his classroom performance, we've opted not to go the hearing aid route just yet. But having already looked into them, the pricing is ridiculous........and generally not covered by insurance at all (while abortions are apparently a necessity for health plans these days ).

Hearing aid prices are comically absurd.
It's like they're in a technological la la land.
It's basically like food prices in the Airport.

you can buy cheap ones, but they suck.
I am sure I will need one in the next 10 years. I listen to a lot of loud music and go to a lot of concerts.

I tell my dad over and over, for them to work, you actually have to put them in your ear

Wat?
Gotta get old for hearing aids to be cheap, Medicare old. Mom gets hers that way. Dad got one of those 2 wheeled with a seat walkers through medicare the other day, no charge (after all those 2 have paid into the system I should say no FURTHER charge but they are still paying taxes so even that is not correct).
