so long as you are healthy and drink plenty of water(100+ oz and close to a gallon if possible) then no so long as you don't go over 600+ grams for an extended period of time. Plenty of studies to back this up, don't let those trying to sell a product scare you.
Eat 1g per lbs of bodyweight to 2gxbw and you will be more than fine so long as you drink water.
Granted if you are pounding beer, not drinking water, working out 2-3x a day and eating mega protien, sure. otherwise no.

About the standard rule of thumb for bodybuilders gaining mass. I have seen some bump up even more but most of these guys are also on gear and have to feed that animal. That's seriously alot of damn protein to consume on a daily basis.
If you are thinking about consuming that much I would invest in mucho TP and maybe a good toilet as well.
