Also a fun fact: randomly ran into Rex Ryan on the course in Pamplona that year.

Different types of bulls (brands basically) run it every day.
That's right, they come from different ranches each day. They track statistics like gorings, etc. attributable to bulls that come from the same ranch year in year out.

I never realized some of those were steers and some were bulls
Edit: and yeah "running of the bulls" in NOLA is lame as frick. It's just a premature nut/ poor mans red dress run

This is from day 2 from this year. The guy getting hooked in the arm and dragged along is brutal.

Did it in 1995, which happened to be the same year a kid from the US was gored and bled to death. Good times!
Truth. The year I did it we have all kinds of pics of the guys I went there with running alongside the bulls and one of me swatting one with a rolled up pamphlet. While there we partied with some coeds from the University of Kentucky and they were bragging about their run. It turned out that as soon as the first rocket went off they sprinted the 800 meters down the run, into the bullring and jumped the fence- never visually or physically coming in contact with any bulls.

About 90% of the people running never see a bull, they all run into the arena before the bulls are even in their area.

They fight the bulls in the arena later in the day. That part was nearly as much fun as the run itself - almost felt like I was in the ancient Roman Empire watching games.
The run itself is a huge adrenaline rush. The party was one of the best I've ever seen anywhere. Beautiful part of the world.

Ran with a group of LSU Law students when we studied abroad in Lyon. Had a blast. Absolutely recommend doing it

A nephew and his wife went this year. I have not received the narrative of their experience yet.

I did it a few years ago. You can get as close or as far away from the bulls as you want to get. It's all personal preference. As others have said the opening party is unrivaled.

I ran opening day last summer
Parties were even more fun. I stayed at one of the campsites with hundreds of other travelers and that shite was wild. One of the bull fighters died that year.
