Public GT school v/s Private school in BR advice needed.

My daughter will be attending kindergarten. She went to St Jude Pre-k last year. We decided to get her tested through EBR gifted and talented program and she scored above the 94th percentile and qualifies for all day GT class attendance.
My dilemma is: Do I take her out of private school to place her in a public school GT program? The public school would be Wildwood Elementary.
I know that BR public school is shite but what about their GT program? TIA for any helpful advice.

GT program in EBR are great even in public schools....shifted my son from private to GT in 2nd grade six years ago....best decision ever. Schools like Parkview Elementary and Glasgow Middle are top notch....with BR High and Lee High being great Magnet option later on.
Hope that helps or holler if you need more info.

Academically, GT are a great option.
But there are other factors to consider such moral and social ramifications.

Other than Baton Rouge High which is a long way off, they will all be mixed schools for the most part. Gifted programs inner twined with regulars schools for diversity. Either go private, or move to zackary, central, or out of Parrish.

Pay for an elite private school or put them in gifted.

The GT program in BR is great. I am a teacher and would have no reservations about sending my kid through that program.
If she's not in GT, private is the only way to go in BR.

I've heard wonderful things about the FLAIM programs.

Don't know the situation in EBR. I know in several places, the specialized programs like GT were put into lower performing schools in order to artificially boost the overall performance of the school. Which meant that there were often some delicate situations as students progress to middle school. Generally, though, the elementary schools were not as bad.

I am curious about that new charter school they're building at woman's hospital. Supposed to pump.out geniuses left and right. Not sure how it's going to work here. Would be nice to send kids to a great free school.

Dont know anything about the GT program you speak of but I have a thought to consider. I have had my kids at private schools throughout. Public schools are GOVT schools. The govt cant do anything well why would you entrust your children to them. FWIW I am a product of public schools and there is a big difference between private school and Govt school even if the Govt school is considered "Good".

I would only consider magnet in EBR. I only have friends with kids at Westdale and that school is pretty fabulous. We applied there as a backup plan for my youngest if she didn't get into U-High and we really had to take some time to think about it before passing on Westdale.
From what I understand from friends with kids in the magnet programs they are very happy with elementary and high school but middle school is iffy.
I was glad to see the EBR teacher say he/she would have no reservations about putting his/her child in the system now. I taught in EBR in the late 90s and I said then my kids would never go into EBR programs because I didn't trust the school board and/or outside forces not to come in screw things up.
ETA: my neighbors kids all went to St. Jude and they couldn't speak more highly of it.

I went to EBR GT programs in the early years and can honestly say it was a huge difference in my childhood. Being around other kids who could challenge me academically was enormously helpful. Do it.

Just know the difference between a 'self-contained' Gifted program and a 'resource' gifted. LaSalle Elementary, for example, is self contained so gifted are completely segregated from the general population for classroom instruction.
Resource may mean some classes are shared with regular students or your child will be pulled out of a regular class to attend a gifted class.
Some schools have BOTH self-contained and gifted.
Overall the gifted self-contained are very solid. Problem is that they are within a possibly less than desirable school (general pop) on the whole. Make sure to meet with the principle of the school as well.

Mine were at Westdale academic magnet , Sherwood Middle and BRMHS. It's a great path to choose and you can then max out their college funds . I give Wham and BRMHS the highest recommendation and Sherwood Middle better than average marks. They will be around a LOT of really really bright kids. And very little social pressure compared to private school.
